A featured event at this year's Festival of Live Art is Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model, an award-winning performance by artist and Director Bryony Kimmings and her 9 year-old niece Taylor Houchen, who is a superb young actress.

Kimmings begs the question ‚??What does it really take to be a Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model for a child of the 21st century‚?Ě? The answer is found in the invention of the character Catherine Bennett, a dinosaur-loving, bike-riding, tuna pasta-eating pop star, who vows to make her world famous and prove that an alternative to conforming is possible!

The stage is set up as a beautiful fantasy forest, draped in glittering silk. As we move through this journey with aunt and niece, the audience soon discovers that this is not a fairytale for children; instead it is an audacious and provocative protest against the world‚??s attempts to sexualise and turn childhood into a commodity. It is a tale of protection, of 9-year-old minds and of taking on the world with your family.

Girls become knights dressed in armour, the audience is shocked by eyeballs being gouged, machine guns and batons are used as props, and a powerful combat is played out against a society that sets the stereotypes for the young and pressures them to conform. The battle is also against the wide spread exploitative information that young children are exposed to every day.

Costume changes are many and the music moves from playful, to provocative, to a heart pounding war-like stampede. Smoke fills the room as the performers dance frenetically; at any time the mood can shift from humour to rage.

This outstanding play will no doubt leave women in the audience with a strong sense of empowerment, as well as the need to influence the next generation of young women with the ability to move forward with this positive attitude. As the performance was delivered with such splendid skill, I believe men too would take away something positive from the message that this piece delivers.

Reminding us that this world is full of choices, this play brings to life the feminist message better than I‚??ve ever seen delivered before.

With brilliant, sincere and passionate acting, Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model is truly a heartfelt show full of tears, laughter, and visual extravagance.

Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model is the winner of four awards in 2013: The Edinburgh Fringe First, The Three Weeks Editors Award, Fringe Review Outstanding Theatre Award and The Arches Brick.
