The wonderful jazz/soul voice – Alma Zygier is launching her new band ‘The Commoners’ and sharing the stage with the jazz/folk-influenced performer Jonathan Skovron as he debuts his new outfit ‘Kafka & The Winos’ together in the new RUBY CARTER LOUNGE (upstairs from the MEMO hall), as part of the MEMO ST KILDA JAZZ SUMMIT.
Alma Zygier & The Commoners
The Commoners are a brand new Melbourne band playing a heady mix of original material, blues & indie rock. Featuring singer Alma Zygier, Ash Griffin on guitar, Angus Radley on bass, and brothers Ollie & Albert Rolf on keys & drums respectively. Think guitar soaked, overdriven tubes with a strong backbeat, oozing Hammond & supplying a lush bed for Alma’s compelling & urgent vocals.
Kafka and the Winos
Jonathan Skovron (guitar, vocals) is a Melbourne-based guitarist/composer who has worked extensively as a performing and recording musician in various guises and genres. His new project, Kafka and the Winos, explores the area of intersection between his idiosyncratic folky/pop sensibilities as a singer-songwriter, and the spirit, structure and harmonic language of jazz and improvisation. Featuring Simon Starr (upright bass, vocals) and Nick Karasavvidis (drums, vocals) as well as some special guests, this will be the debut performance of Kafka and the Winos, as the band works towards its upcoming debut album release in early 2020.
