darebin arts – the ball room

What can you do with 2000 balls? Sure, you can count them, catch them and throw them…but imagine what else they could be! Play ball with us and find out!

The Ball Room is an immersive theatrical experience for children young and old where the sense of play becomes part of the fabric of the performance. It builds on various states of play – physical, imaginative and reflective play.

The Ball Room at the Northcote Town Hall, 189 High Street, Northcote, Saturday 8, Sunday 9, Tuesday 11 April and Wednesday 12 April, 10.30am and 2pm.

The audience is asked to contemplate why humans have been fascinated for millennia by this shape, the ball, as an object of play and to notice its presence in the natural environment.  The Ball Room also aims to activate the imagination, asking the audience to consider the ball as a literal object, but also as a symbol that represents other things (an eyeball, a game, a moon).

Play is an integral part of The Ball Room experience. Alongside performers, two play facilitators quietly introduce new playful devices into the space to infinitely extend the audience’s play and to invoke a sense of wonder and curiosity.

The 2000 balls differ in scale, texture and weight.

Created with a stimulating sound score and accompanied by live musicians, this experience will have you bouncing to a beat and dreaming of ballrooms from yesteryear.

The creative team behind The Ball Room include:  Nancy Sposato: Director & Performer; Cat Sewell: Director & Designer; Zoë Barry: Composer & Sound Design; Teresa Blake: Performer & Musician and Sam Doyle: Lighting Design.  Created in collaboration with Andrew Grey, Steph O’Hara & Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore.  Biographies follow the release.
