Venue Review by Melynda von Wayward
What: The Great Den
Where: Argyle St, Fitzroy (Behind 175 Johnston St)
Raised in a family with a grandfather who hand-crafted furniture that was inspired by mid-century design, it’s fair to say that founder and director of Great Dane Furniture, Anton Assaad, has classic Scandinavian design in his blood. A committed and passionate devotee of its precision, simplicity, and aesthetic beauty, Anton’s love of furniture transcends all that he does – and Great Dane furniture in Collingwood proves testament to this. But not only is Anton Assaad equipped with an eye for quality furniture, his new venture as a venue entrepreneur is also making positive waves in the ever expanding Events community.
Follow the narrow candle lit laneway behind the Fitzroy furniture showroom to ‘The Great Den’ - an event space guarding a private collection of Assad’s furniture, rarely seen by public eyes. Imagine a room filled with a collection of authentic, immaculate and rare 20th century treasures... This is the treasured furniture Great Dane founder Anton Assaad could just not bear to part with.
This very private and almost hidden venue will welcome you with its impeccable vintage sofas, stunning rosewood dinner table, and abundance of reindeer pelts (be warned this is not a venue for vegetarians). As cocktails and champagne flow freely, the room glows as soft light flows from classic pendants, all the while the record player sizzles in the background.
The success of this venue will be in no small part to Assaad wisely partnering with the best caterers in town – Ed Dixon Food Design and Birdman Catering. Now while I am not too familiar with Birdman Catering, I do know a thing or two about Ed Dixon.
Beginning her humble beginnings in a small kitchen in South Yarra, the talented and visionary Ed Dixon took a small business idea and, through hard work and determination, has turned it into an award winning catering company where the passion for food speaks for itself.
With over 13 years of experience, Ed and her team have transcended catering to create the quintessential ‘designer culinary experience’. This ability has not only seen Ed Dixon Food Design win several restaurant awards, but it has also seen the company be chosen to partner with some of Melbourne’s best venues and events as their preferred caterer - including the Melbourne Spring Fashion Festival, fortyfivedownstairs, The Substation, Murray White Room and many more.
With professional staff, beautiful cocktails and divine food, The Great Den will no doubt become a venue that is favoured by many inner-city people who want to celebrate their special occasion in an interesting venue that exudes style and sophistication.
