Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2014 from all of us!

Scottee (From The Worst of Scottee)
What a brilliant year at has been at Theatre Works. I want to thank all the artists, producers, companies and Festivals who have come on this extraordinary journey with us. I want to thank you - our audience for supporting the work of many of Australia's most exciting, rigorous and prolific independent artists. I want to thank our very small team here, who have worked with me to deliver my vision and provide the support needed for artists to make work of exceptional quality. Thank you to our front of house staff and volunteer ushers who make sure that you are safe and have a ticket! Thanks to our publicists who get the word out there and to the press who have continued to support the works we do despite big changes in the media landscape this year. Thank you to our Board who never get in the way of what we do but ask the right questions and provide their support as needed. To our funders - Arts Victoria, The Australia Council for the Arts and City of Port Phillip (project funding), The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, our donors, all the many people who supported our fundrasier this year and our sponsors, especially Vinaceous Wines and Claypots (who always make sure that we have the BEST opening night parties).
On January 20, to coincide with the opening night of UK hit The Worst of Scottee, we will be announcing the projects and artists that we will be supporting to develop and present work in 2014. I can't wait to tell you what we have planned.
We have 5 Midsumma projects which you can read about below. They come from LA, London, Melbourne and Sydney and it all kicks off on January 7.
I look forward to seeing you in the new year.
With much love and thanks
Daniel Clarke
Creative Producer/CEO

Thank You For Being A Friend

Presented by Matthew Management and Neil Gooding Productions

Thank You For Being A Friend is the ultimate Golden Girls experience with Dorothy, Sophia, Rose and Blanche delivering all the classic dialogue, razor sharp gags and taboo-breaking stories you'd expect. A wonderful introduction to the joy of the hit television series for first timers, it'll have the uninitiated rolling in the aisles, while die-hard fans will fondly remember the brilliance of The Golden Girls!
Airing from 1985 to 1992, The Golden Girls centred on four older women sharing a home in Miami, Florida. It received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twice. It also won three Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The show dealt with many topical issues, such as coming out and same-sex marriage, aged care, homelessness, AIDS and discrimination against people with HIV.
Complete with a replica of the infamous set from the TV series and “double-take” puppet design by Joey Crea-tive, prepare for an evening of laughter, spectacular put-downs and familiar friends, as Miami's four favourite girls reunite for this lovingly hilarious tribute show!

Lay of the Land

Presented by Theatre Works
Acclaimed for his charged, funny and sexy performance work, Tim Miller takes up the most challenging queer social texts of our time. In 'Lay of the Land' Miller charts the origin of queer love and desire from a 9 year old's perspective, a lifetime of battling homophobia in the US, a gay political protest orgy that brings down the government, and finally to the moment he married his Australian husband, writer Alistair McCartney, in NYC on the day the Defence of Marriage Act was overturned. A fierce and funny performance exploring the Slings and Eros of outrageous queer fortune.

Time: Sun 19 at 7pm, Fri 24 & Sat 25 at 8.30pm

The Worst of Scottee

Premiere Event Midsumma Festival 2014
Presented by Theatre Works
Winner – Total Theatre Award for Innovation (Edinburgh Fringe 2013)
In this wicked and hilarious Australian premiere, Scottee encounters past flames, ex-friends and people who no longer like him in attempt to find out where he went wrong…
Everyone has done stuff they regret and most people bury it in the past. Six months ago Scottee hired a psychotherapist and a filmmaker to dig up his past. Scottee wants to find out what people really think of him. Why did he pretend to have AIDS? What prompted him to steal money from his nan? Why did he tell everyone his friend committed suicide when she hadn’t, and what caused all this behavior in the first place?
Performed in a photo booth, this humbling and genuine performance exposes you to four snapshots of Scottee’s troublesome teens, presenting you with even more reasons not to like him.
This is Scottee at his very worst.
Written and performed by Scottee
Directed by Chris Goode 'A theatre-maker who's up there with the very best' - The Guardian.
Date: 20 Jan 2014 - 25 Jan 2014
Time: Mon-Sat 7:00pm
Price: $32 full / $25 conc & grps 8+ [plus booking fee]
