Make the Call
Theatre Review by Danelle Wynne
What: Make the Call - Festival of Live Art
When: 29/03/2014
Where: Theatre Works
Co-created and performed by: Harriet Gillies and Roslyn Helper.

Make the Call
is an idea harvested from the mind of Harriet Gillies and Roslyn Helper and created for the Festival of Live Art. A phone call is made, questions are asked and directions are given; you are given a time and a location and the performance begins.

This inclusive 20-minute theatre/art piece explores the idea of 'beauty' and where each individual sees it and feels it. As every performance is different, each audience member‚??s experience is purely personal, and the show takes the time to draw out the necessary facts that allows each individual to be taken on a journey.

This piece is not only an eye opener, but it is a real opportunity to revisit beauty in this world, and to see it again in a fresh light and with a renewed vision.

Wandering down to the spot I was allocated in St Kilda, I was a little anxious yet very excited to see what was about to unfold in front of me - as I had no idea what the show was about or what to anticipate - all I knew was that I was going to receive a call. Waiting at the location I watched as passers by came and went, anticipating that each one might be part of the show.

Receiving a call I quickly answered my phone to this lovely lady who told me to look behind me and see that there was an envelope with my name on it, surely enough there was. Opening it I found a pen, a postcard and four stickers all with the word Beautiful on them. There my journey began!

What I found beautiful was the explanation of beauty I had to create, ‚??beauty is found within, those who choose to look will find it.‚?? I started to open my eyes to see what was beautiful to me around St Kilda; the old architecture morphed with new, the people in their unique and quirky ways.

Through being asked to sing a song, I chose the Little Mermaid‚??s Part of your World, as that song alone explores all the strange bits and bobs of the world that are beautiful. By singing this song to the lady on the phone, I helped to make that spot in St Kilda a beautiful place as well. Wandering around St Kilda I started to notice people in a different way, not seeing just them but also seeing what beauty they could bring to the world.

If one really wants to be a part of a piece of art, this is definitely the show for you! I rather enjoyed this inclusive live performance, and I recommend it for those that really like to become involved with theatre and enjoy being taken on an adventure within the real world.
