In 1994 Joe Creighton released his first solo album Hollywell and supported New Orleans First Familyof Funk, The Neville Brothers on their Australian tour Back then Brian Wise – RRR was quoted as saying “Joe Creighton’s credentials are impeccable as is this record. Celtic roots mix with New Orleans rhythms and more in an absolutely wonderful concoction.”
This period ignited a great friendship and musical respect between The Neville Brother’s drummer, Willie Green and Creightonthat culminated in time spent in New Orleans.
In New Orleans Creightonwas introduced to world class musicians that inspired and captivated him and he was privileged to experience gigs at the Heritage Festival with Cyril Neville’s Uptown Allstars and of course was hosted by The Neville Brothers at the famous Tipitina’s. Creighton had always been a big fan of The Meters, The Neville Brothers, Dr John and Professor Longhair since the funky 70′s and he was now living the dream.
The time spent with these world class musicians in the infections birthplace of Blues – New Orleans, had a profound effect and as a result Creighton formed a band called The Uptown Rulers when he returned to Australia who became regulars at Melbourne’s iconic Espy Hotel and attracted a dedicated following.
Creighton’s new show, JC & the Po’Boys, picks up where The Uptown Rulers left off and are breaking all the rules by getting bigger and louder with this nine piece outfit.
The nine piece band delivers a banquet of New Orleans Second Line Funk, Soul and R&B from artists such as The Meters, Dr John, Professor Longhair, Sly & the Family Stone and the Commodores along withMavis Staples, The Temptations, The Staple Singers, Ann Peebles and Etta James.
Thethree piece horn section is led by the legendary Jimmy Sloggett – add two drummers, and you create a recipe for some real high energy scorching funk.
It would be hard to find anyone in this county that has the musicianship and talent of Joe Creighton as a bass player and singer. When he performs he takes his audience on the journey with him and effortlessly creates a palpable magic that fills the room with his infectious bass beat and powerful vocals.
So come and celebrate New Orleans style with JC & the Po’Boys at the launch of this electrifying funky new show at the Flying Saucer Club.
“Joe Creighton and his amazing 9 piece band JC & THE PO BOYS joyously celebrated the music of New Orleans in a stunning sell out debut at The Caravan Club. The dance floor was fully occupied all night as the band faithfully explored the melodic funk grooves of New Orleans. The superb horn section lead by the legendary Jimmy Sloggert   was the icing on the cake with a classic New Orleans brass sound. We at Caravan can’t wait to have them back.” Peter Foley- Caravan Club
