NAT ADDERLEY SNR COMES TO OUR TOWN
NAT ADDERLEY comes to Melbourne
Nat Adderley Jnr is famous for producing 90’s Soul Star Luther Vandross, AND His daddy was Nat Adderley Snr the Brother of Julian Cannonball Adderley and top ten on the Trumpet and Cornet.
This is sayin’ SMOMETHIN’ cos Cannon was the 2nd greatest alto sax man ever after Bird, and his brand of jazz was ‘Soul inflicted’ hence a wider, even hipper audience. We was so hip we was ‘Hep’!
Brother Nat 1st graced us with ‘The Presence’ in Melbourne in 1981 to conduct a ‘jazz clinic’ (I love that phrase – we all fully sick) and he got my attention praising my drumming, which is the way to get a drummers attention girls and bouys! He selected me for his Quartet and a got to spend a week with this gentle, cool as a fridge, non stop rapper-raver. YEP! Brother Nat can talk the wheels off a bus -- under water with a mouth full of marbles and like a true great ‘dad n daver’ he was never ever boring. He was just FULL of interesting anecdotes and he didn’t hold back. After all! His Quintet with Cannonball was THE top name in Jazz in the swinging 60’s!!
He liked Australia so much (and who doesn’t?—even Pommy PM Tony Blair was jealous) he came back a few years later and he even worked on his Orstraylian Accent, trying to get it to sound like the ‘Caw of the Crow.’
In 1989 He graced our Humble Boozer, Mike Hancock’s ‘The Limerick Arms’ in South Melbourne and did a series of gigs with the hard swinging and highly jazz edu-bercated Ted Vining Trio with the mighty Bob ‘Centipede’ Sedergreen on the ‘goanner’, Bull-Fiddle Meister Barry Buckley and a young Aussie kid who blows holes in the Alto, the now legendary Ian Chaplin.
Any blah—enough of me … here they are……
