It was 2008 when James was first diagnosed with Leukaemia and he was just finishing Year 5.

His medical treatment involved a gruelling three years of chemo therapy under the care of Monash Medical Centre in Clayton as part of a research study. As a result of his treatment he lost all his hair for about 12 months and battled through the sickness.

It was the love, care, kindness and inspiration of his family, friends and organisations such as Make a Wish, Aardvark and Carlton ...

It is January 2017 and Fairfax Studio in Melbourne’s Art Centre is full of Tim Finn, Split Enz and Crowded House fans. A little older and perhaps wiser.

The show is White Cloud: a Tim Finn, Ken Duncum and Sue Healey collaboration.

Melbourne based artist, writer and free verse poet Benjamin Box is an anathema. Or at least that’s what he believes his latest art buyer thinks of him.

After commissioning his latest work: ‘Forbid Yourself Nothing.’, a large size spray paint and acrylic on canvass; the buyer in question: …”ran for the hills upon completion of the work and didn’t even have the manners to sling me a modest materials fee.”

I thought it may have been a case of sour grapes until Ben showed me the two ‘test prints’ or ‘studies’ he’d sent the buyer before commencing the final picture.

“There’s a special place in hell for buyers like that.” he informed me.

    Not only did this ...

  11. Robert Mate Mate and Reconciliation

For a couple of years from 1994 I had the privilege of working with Robert Mate Mate, an indigenous elder from Woorabinda with strong connections to Palm Island.

Our creative journey started when Robert invited me to accompany him to Palm Island.

He was invited to attend an official celebration launching the Year of Reconciliation which was a new federal government incentive with the then indigenous affairs minister Robert Tickner in attendance.

Behind the scenes Robert Mate Mate was also invited to perform a spirit releasing ceremony for a young Palm Islander named Wangung who died 120 years prior.

  12. SMADJ from Istanbul and Paris to Australia.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tunisian born, Parisian musician Jean-Pierre Smadja aka SMADJ who is currently on tour along the east coast of Australia performing with his signature Oud, both acoustic and electric.

With it’s origins in the Middle East the Oud is considered a sacred instrument and described as the King of Instruments. Legend has it that the Oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam from the pharaonic era stretching back over 5,000 years.

Smadj grew up listening to Oriental, Brazilian, funk and folk ...

  13. Blues dudes Ivan Zar and Werner Martin

I had the opportunity of filming a live to air interview at 3CR between Blues journalist / presenter Werner Martin and visiting Blues legend Ivan Zar.

Ivan painted a picture through word and song about his experiences touring indigenous communities throughout the Kimberley over a 20 year period. Fascinating to say the least. And I will present that footage in the not too distant future for you viewing pleasure.

In the interim I would like to inform our readers about some gigs that are coming

  15. The Night Sky is a Jewellery Store Window

    20 Artists
    Yarra Hotel Abbotsford
    Friday November 13th @ 8pm free entry!

I first met Damon Smith while accompanying Western Australian Blues legend Ivan Zar to Damon’s home.

We were there to discuss a documentary that Damon is currently producing on Ivan’s life and times.

I was immediately impressed by Damon’s well polished appearance, polite manner and straight shooting honesty.

As a stay at home dad of a three year old and chief carer of Jerry Lee his sixteen year old dog and equally old cat Hannah, I quickly realised that this is a man that does not waste his time!
