Congratulations to Steve and Monique from Stefano Lubiana wines

Steve and Monique Lubiana have been jointly nominated for the award of Gourmet Traveller Wine's Winemaker of the Year. Steve and Monique are co-nominated - one of only eight finalists. This is very exciting and we will wait with fingers crossed until the final award is announced on 26 September 2012.

This is just one of a few prestigious accolades that they have received. Others include:
5 red stars in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2012.

Decanter's Andrew Jefford named Steve Lubiana as one of Australia's ten bravest winemakers in May 2010: 'their wines accurately, uncompromisingly and sometimes beautifully reflect their origins. They are like nothing else on earth'.

One rare 96 rating, two 95 ratings and three 94 ratings in the 2011 James Halliday Wine Companion.

For those who missed tasting these wines at our Friday night tasting a week ago, they are still on special until Thursday 16 August 2012. Congratulations Steve and Monique!

Wine of The Week

This week is a pair of wines as Wine of the Week

Michael Hall Flaxman's Valley Syrah 2009
Michael Hall Stonewell Valley Shiraz 2009

Michael Hall is a name to watch. These two wines are both from the same grape variety and the same vintage. He has named them differently to reflect that they are different in style

The Flaxman's Valley is in Eden Valley. At 520 metres above sea level, it is the cooler than the Barossa Valley floor. It is not big and rich but lighter and full of spice, black pepper and raspberries. A great tight structure and soft tannins.

The Stonewall Valley is from the Barossa Valley floor, in the Seppeltfield sub-region. This wine is big and rich - more typical Barossa in style - with plums and chocolate.

Both of them have an elegance which characterizes all of Michael's wines.

Domaine de Nizas
Friday 17 August 2012 5:00 – 8:00pm

We have been lucky enough to secure some bargain drinking for the south of France.
Nizas, a small village in the Herault Valley just eight kms north of Pézenas, where Molière, the famous 17th century French playwright lived. The Mediterranean climate with low rainfall and dry, warm summers are perfect for the Syrah (Shiraz) and other grape varieties planted there.

John Goelet found this site, already planted, in 1998. His family history in wine along with his experience in Australia and the US (Taltarni, Clos du Val) together with winemaker Bernard Meunier’s expertise is producing some great drinking. But don’t take our word for it. Come and taste the Syrah dominant red, a white from Roussanne, Vermentino and Viognier and an extreme bargain from 60 year-old Carignan vines. All for under $20 per bottle! Free.

Summerfield Wines
Friday 24 August 2012 5:00 – 8:00pm

“Outstanding winery regularly producing exemplary wine” James Halliday.
Ian Summerfield, a third generation farmer in Moonambel, watched while vines were planted in his area. He planted vines in the 1970’s taking lessons from the early Pyrenees vignerons and was soon making excellent full-bodied reds.

Today, his son Mark has taken over most of the winemaking and the tradition continues. Luscious, full bodied Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot that are guaranteed to be stunning. Come and meet Mark and taste with the winemaker. Free.

2010 release of the Lindeman’s Coonawarra Trio
Friday 31 August 2012 5:00 – 8:00pm

In 1967 Lindemans planted two vineyards:
Limestone Ridge was planted with the classic Australian blend of varieties – Shiraz and Cabernet – on a ridge of limestone.

St George was solely Cabernet Sauvignon which has always excelled on the terra rossa soil. The 1980 picked up the Jimmy Watson trophy.

The third of the trio is Pyrus – a Bordeaux styled blend still from grapes grown on the great terra rossa soil.
Lindemans has deservedly been awarded many accolades including International Winemaker of the Year in the IWSC in London as well as International Winery of the Year by US Wine and Spirit magazine.

Come and taste these brilliant new releases all at special prices for the day as well. (Plus a sneak look at the St George 2001!)
