    A Spoilt Little Rich Country.

“A spoilt little rich country, a nation of whingers- that’s us.”
That was veteran financial reporter Michael Pascoe’s opening line for a brochure promoting property developer Lend Lease’s latest land subdivision in Melbourne’s West.
This marketing brochure goes on to highlight that we’ve been “ spoilt by two decades of unbroken growth and that we have the best performing economy in the developed world.
One which is heading into its third decade of unbroken growth- something we should be celebrating instead of complaining about. Australians have lost perspective about their good fortune and prospects.”
So why aren’t Australians buying it !

A generation of Australians have known nothing but Economic Good Times.
John Howard’s ‘We’ve never had it this good’ resonates today as it did for most of his tenure. During these last two decades of uninterrupted growth, a large proportion of those under forty would struggle to remember the nasty offshoots which recessions spawn,
double digit unemployment rates , depressed property markets, and an all pervasive pessimism. And for anyone under 30, recessions are what happen in other countries- they’re Un Australian.

    SEASON FINISHES Sunday 5th February

Belvoir St Theatre and the acclaimed Urban Theatre Projects (UTP) have joined forces for this big-picture show about a city and society redefining itself.
    http://www.belvoir.com.au/productions-1/buried-city

Late one night in the gutted façade of a building primed for redevelopment, a group of security workers, labourers, and a local teenager find themselves haunting the same territory. One by one they rule a line in the sand, and by dawn they're set for a showdown over who builds the future and who gets to own it.

Perry Keyes is Perry, a lazy security guard, resigned to his lot in life, philosophical (but nonetheless troubled and concealing anger, bubbling, only just, beneath a quiet surface), whiling away the hours drinking, talking idle nonsense masquerading as pocketbook wisdom and paying a teenager for oral sex. He's strangely likable and, despite his creator being more singer-songwriter than actor, surprisingly credible. We're talking grunge. Think building site. Scaffolding. That's the urban aesthetic that pervades Raimondo Cortese's Buried City; the title alluding to the buried, if not completely dead, emotional states

    Kevin Hedgehog Comes To Light

    Who IS this Kevin Hedgehog?

    White Magic
    Steve Kilby & Martin Kennedy
Released 25th February 2011 through MGM

A collaboration that appears to be gaining more substance with the release of their second album together is that of Steve Kilby and Martin Kennedy.

Their debut, “Unseen Music Unheard Words” is now followed by “White Magic”, an ambient mix of acoustic rock and spacious textures swimming under the distinctive lead vocals of Steve Kilby and hypnotic backing vocals of Leona Prue and Selena Cross.

I have endeavoured not to make comparisons, but Steve’s voice is so unique it’s hard not to make connections with his former incarnate, “The Church”. For that matter the textural layers that the music creates are, in part, also reminiscent of Martin’s band,“All India Radio” (they actually feature on the song Close).

Martin seems to have his fingers in many artistic pies with drawings, animation and associations with other musicians such as Don Meers. This is definitely a partnership of two ...

THE ONLY MAN I EVER REALLY HATED

    BY GREGOR MANSON

I can’t remember the name and our paths only crossed once, but had a profound effect on me. It stays with me to this day.

I left school at 15, jumping before I was pushed: I hadn’t been getting on with the powers that be at school. They were determined to get rid of me one way or another: my political activities in relation to Vietnam and the Springboks had made me a marked man.

My parents were devastated, and offered to pay for me to go to Uni if I would stay on and bite my lip. I was having none of that; University was for rich kids back then and I wasn’t one of them bastards….I was going out to work.

After about a year in the meat works and a couple of factories, my mother convinced me to sit for the Commonwealth Public Service exams. I passed, and was accepted. The purchase of some polyester garments soon followed, and I reported for duty. I was sent to a musty filing section in an old office block.

There was lots of wood paneling, overhead fans, and creaking leather chairs; the cool gloom in the old building’s shiny corridors was almost Victorian, but I didn’t mind. The work was a lot less physical and I didn’t end the day covered in blood and shit, so I was definitely on the up as far as I could see.

My first task upon arrival every day was to go

Smoking ads – Public Sector vs. Private Sector.

There have been many Anti smoking ads over the years, employing a wide variety of messages to curb the evil of smoking. The reason, I think, that there has never been a big sea-change is smoking thinking, resulting from the advertising, is that changing behavior is not enough, when the negative effects of smoking - addiction, loss of health and premature ageing, come as a result of the chemicals and agents used by tobacco companies, to ensure the longevity of their product.

Irrespective of the limits put on packaging by Government, if Governments out-lawed the additives and burning agents, which are used to increase consumption and dependence on the cigarettes, many of the deleterious effects of smoking would be significantly reduced. Cigarettes are the only consumable product on the Market that Government allow to be sold, even though they know that the product is carcinogenic, and will probably kills its user. Making the product less addictive and cancerous, is a far more effective way to reduce the Public Health burden due to smoking,

    Amy Post - pic WIKIPEDIA

I wonder if three simple sisters from New York ever imagined what they would unleash on the world. The three Fox sisters are widely considered to be the founders of spiritualism. The two younger sisters Margret and Kate announced on March 31st 1848 that they had made contact with a murdered peddler. After announcing their ability Margret and Kate were sent to live with their sister Leah and brother David respectively. Eventually, Amy and Isaac Post , close family friends, took them into their home. The Posts were two fanatical Quakers and became among the first believers in spiritualism.

Their modern views on slavery and women’s right gave them credit in progressive political circles and went some way in authenticating the emerging religion and the claims of the girls. Margret and Kate reaped the rewards from their paranormal claims, becoming richer than they could have expected and marrying into even greater wealth. They were well travelled and enjoyed comfortable lives. However this was not destined to last. In 1888 the girls sensationally produced a damming written confession ...

    The Alternative Gig Guide

    Edition 1 Movie

    TAGG FIRST EDITION

    My Rough Diamond Child

Helmut Katterl finally convinced me to publish this little mag with him as a partner. It was a wild ride...

I thought this movie of the mag serves the purpose well as you can pause the pages if you choose to read the rock history of that era.

I want to add tracks that are pertinent to each issue of TAGG, so if you were in any of those bands I would love to hear from you and possibly send me any updates, requiems or current gigs, giveaways for current product, etc..

I've chosen Dave Hole, for it was his 3 piece from WA, along with the lounge room gigs from Men at Work and The Fabulaires at an infamous Coppin Street East Malvern house, and putting on my own Saturday afternoon gigs at The Waterside Hotel, featuring Dave Hole Band, Flash Annie and the Floyd Boys, The Dead Livers, Bush Turkys and The Illegal Smiles that inspired the magazines publication.

Helmut had had a similar idea and as we nutted it out we chose my format, I had been publishing

    THE CRYSTAL REVIEWED

The George Hotel, Fitzroy Street St Kilda, past home
    of the Crystal ballroom.

    By Patrick Miles - June 14th, 1979

A variety of senses motivate people to see a rock’n’roll band. It is impossible to cater to everybody’s whims and invariably someone is thoroughly peeved with the conditions in which they hear a band.
Animal involvement, casual observance and uninterrupted study swirl together in differing levels of audience participation and someone’s night is a painful one.
I have yet to visit all of Melbourne’s venues however the Crystal Ballroom in St. Kilda, due mainly to its size and layout, provides a roomy cage for healthy co-habitation of different kinds of people.
The grandiose décor of the Crystal Ballroom initially seems incongruous with some of the human remnants that patronise the place.

    SPORTS AT BOMBAY

    By Robyn Gunn

The Sports live to air radio and television hook-up at Bombay Rock last Friday was both a success and a disappointment.
Their 8pm performance for the 3XY/2SM/2NX/4IP network was great – the audience was in ta co-operative mood, cheering right on cue and the band’s performance was one of the tightest.

But somehow, between 9p, when they left the stage, and 12.30am when they returned, the zap had gone and it was a pretty nervous group which appeared on the screen for Nightmoves.

Lead singer, Steve Cummings, had changed his shirt and put on the ole hat, but somehow, the boys just didn’t look at home.

It’s a pity the 8pm show couldn’t be the live television performance – the songs were presented in a better order, giving the audience time to warm up properly.

One thing’s for sure, there were few hassles (fights) and the bar wasn’t overcrowded – everyone was out dancing!
Russell Morris and his band did their bit to keep everyone going between Sports performances, and

    COCKTAILS FROM DOWN UNDER

Bill and Marie Schober are very close friends of my father Jack and myself, a more kind and honourable family is rare. Their son Billy Schober also achieved dizzy heights of success in ice skating for this country, a family steeped in excellence.

    So, one of the
old man's pleasures was cocktails...I remember rows of interestingly shaped Baitz liquer bottles and Orefors glasses stacked into dad's '70's styled uber bar arrangement.

So the pair created a seminal cocktail menu book filled with the classics and many invented for the sake of the publication. In the first published complete guide since
Jerry Thomas , Bill Schober used his encyclopedic knowledge and stature to pull together THE most complete cocktail guide of that era with the help and invention of his international peers.

Bill achieved world champion status that honoured our country in many international events and completed his career as the the Bar manger at our State's Government House in Spring Street...the stories HE could tell eh!

We published this guide in 1971, but the classics and standards don't change. Toorak Times will update all the significant measurements and references to today's standards, and will provide a PDF page turner of the original Cocktails from Down Under guide with all its beige glory for '70's era aesthetes!
